Introduction
Ex-convicts in general, and former sex offenders in particular, are treated as outcasts in modern society. Once a person is assigned a label of “ex-convict”, “felon”, or “sex offender”, they are set up for many unique lifetime challenges and trials other people typically do not endure.
Internally, they are burdened with guilt and shame over their past, and are often hopeless to think anything good could ever come of their lives. Externally, they are treated by the world as if they were “less than”, “separated”, “unclean”, “damaged goods”, and “disfigured”. People often become fearful in their presence, and assume that they can’t or won’t ever change. In a remarkably striking sense, they might be considered as modern day “lepers”.
Many of us first heard of lepers, and leprosy as a disease, from reading the Bible or hearing Bible stories as children. In Biblical days, once a person was diagnosed as having leprosy they had to keep their head shaved and their clothes torn. They were considered “outcasts” from society. The Hebrew custom of tearing one’s clothing was an expression of extraordinary emotion, usually of grief, terror, or horror. The tearing of one’s clothes was also an expression of anger or despair. Among the people, they had to maintain a distance and constantly cry out, “unclean”!
“Leprosy was the scourge of the ancient world. Nothing evoked more fear, more dread, or more revulsion than the sight of these walking dead. That is what a leper was called, a walking dead man. The smell of his decaying flesh would announce his coming long before the tattered scraps of his clothing would be seen, or his raspy "Unclean! Unclean!" announcement he was required to declare, could be heard. The stumbling shuffle of toeless feet, the wandering of sightless eyes and the moan of a cheekless mouth, all pointed to Leprosy, this unseen attacker that slowly destroyed human bodies, and made the individual an untouchable to society.” (from Christianity.com as of 5/4/21)
In contrast to the rest of society, Jesus was neither repulsed by, nor fearful of, lepers in His time of ministry here on Earth. He allowed them into His close Presence; and, listened to, touched, healed, blessed and loved them. Jesus is still seeking and saving the lost, even those of us who are labeled felons, ex-convicts or sex offenders – modern day “lepers”.
Of course, He is also seeking and saving those who have never been incarcerated - addicts, liars, cowards, gossipers, adulterers, idolaters, thieves, drunkards, swindlers; as well as the immoral, proud and covetous. Jesus loves us all, and wants us to choose to follow Him, and fall forever in love with Him.
God the Father sent Jesus to willingly give up his life, paying the ultimate price for all our sin for all time. To those who truly repent, receive Him, believe Him and confess Him, the resurrected and living Christ gives us His Holy Spirit to live in us! Christ in us and us in Him! As we truly surrender our lives to Jesus as Lord, and submit to the Leadership of the Holy Spirit, He takes away our guilt, shame and regret over our past. We are set free from the curse of society’s labels. Truly, we are lepers no more!
How can all this be real in your life? Let’s find out…
I came across your book, “Lepers No More” by accident, some would say, but I know God placed it in a very odd place so I could see it and pick it up. I was immediately immersed into this book as soon as I started reading it. After almost 3 years of being incarcerated, going through despair, grief, shame, remorse, unwanted, lonely, I felt a little light and hope. I felt like a hand reached out to me to tell me that reconciliation, rehabilitation, and forgiveness was possible. Thank you for this book and God Bless all the work that you are doing. ~Jose from CA~
I just read “Lepers No More” sitting here in the SHU. I was very encouraged by you and the other testimonies and the way God is working in and through you. It is exciting to think that similar miracles could be in God’s plans for me. ~Chris in OK~
When your ministry came to the Robertson Unit, I had missed the first night but another guy picked up your book, Lepers No More, and was sharing it with me. I started reading it and when I read your testimony and seen your face, I literally had that, Aha moment. God will literally put before you the thing that sets you free. Praise God and thank you for being the vessel that God used to patch a hole in my heart. ~David in TX ~
At age 20, I was quite successful as a High School Drama Teacher and voice actor. Unbeknownst to me I was slowly falling into alcoholism, depression and porn addictions which led me down a path that would change my life forever. At my lowest point, God introduced me to you. I entered DOC feeling like God had left me; however, I found out God had not abandoned me as I thought. I went to the book cart desperate for something to read and found your book, “Lepers No More.” I had felt like my crime would make me a target of eternal humiliation and pain; your book gave me HOPE. Through it, I found new brothers in Christ and knowledge that God had not abandoned me. I am now involved in all sorts of faith filled stuff. I am excited and hopeful for my future. ~Marcus in VA~
By the time you get this letter I will be home but felt the need to write you about your book, Lepers No More. It is a great book and I truly felt the Holy Spirit move in me while reading it. I would sometimes cry and have to put it down. I learned a lot from reading this book and I also rededicated my life to Jesus while reading it. I’m going home as the “Prodigal son”! My mom will be happy! I just wanted to write and say thanks for giving me the opportunity and privilege of reading your book and giving guys like me hope for the future. ~ Kenneth in NC~
I’m 32 years old and as I was growing up, I had difficulty with drug abuse. I started doing drugs at age 15 and dropped out of school. I never understood the steadfast love that Jesus has for me and reading your book, Lepers No More, has given me a strong message on how God works miracles in people’s lives. I would like to thank you for the many testimonies of brothers and sisters in Christ; it has motivated me and strengthened my faith in Jesus. ~Jamie in CO~
